The Basement

The Basement

The basement of the home features a level fieldstone/slate floor and is reached through a small staircase from the laundry room. In a hole in one corner is a sump pump, which leads to a natural spring located under the home. This natural spring water comes right from the taps in the sinks, and we have never needed to use a water softener. In another corner of the stone basement is the original cistern. We have never used it, but  appreciate it as evidence of the long history of our beautiful home. A door in the basement leads to a second area that houses our coal bin, wood pile and oil tanks. We installed a new furnace that is capable for use with oil, coal and wood. We have used a combination of coal and wood and found it to be incredibly economical. We have used wood from the property and have two deliveries of coal during the winter months. The coal delivery truck backs up and shoots the coal right through the basement window into the bin. The basement houses a few old wooden cupboards perfect for preserves, and features a door that leads to the exterior of the home.
